Working with Students who have Learning Disabilities Essay...

Working with Students who have Learning Disabilities Over the past 10 years, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of students who have been diagnosed with learning disabilities. I need to be aware of how to help those students who have learning disabilities and teach to the best of my ability. I also need to be supportive and understand not every student learns in the same way which is why it is important for me to be flexible in my own style of instruction. I need to be knowledgeable and patient, caring and kind, as I work with all of my students, regardless of ability. Some students are aware of other students who have special accommodations or extra time on tests. Documentation is another vital piece in creating and maintaining a concise and productive IEP, which is considered a legal document (Hallahan, Kauffman, Paige 218). Recently, one of the most common disabilities seen today in students is ADHD. Two aspects of effective ways of working with students with ADHD are: teacher direction, classroom structure, functional behavioral assessment and contingency-based-self management. Visual aids, reducing stimuli irrelevant to teaching and proximity to the teacher are all ways in which teachers can help those with ADHD be more productive in the classroom. Functional behavioral assessment (FBA) is another tool teachers can use to deal with behavioral problems. Some issues with ADHD behavior is staying on task and seeking attention from others. The purpose of an FBA is to determine consequences, antecedents and setting events in which the behavior occurs. Sometimes behavior interventionists are asked to observe and conduct an FBA in order to assist in monitoring and changing the target behavior.(Hallahan, Kauffman, Paige 222). People’s Republic of China under Mao The Great Leap Forward was a program designed as an economic stimulus model heavily focused on industry. Under this economic program, individual agricultural areas were merged into larger people’s communities and many of the peasants were ordered to work on enormous infrastructure projects and on the manufacture of iron and steel. Most privatization was banned; personal wealth was confiscated while livestock and farm implements were brought under collective ownership. Under the Great Leap Forward, Mao mandated the employment of a variety of unproven and unscientific new agricultural techniques to boost production. However, due to the diversion of labor to other areas such as steel and infrastructure, China saw a 15% drop in grain production in 1959 followed by a 10% decline in 1960 and no recovery in 1961 . In order to meet government-mandated quotas, many state and local officials exaggerated their respective grain production numbers. Based upon these overstated numbers, party officers had to order a disproportionately high amount of the true harvest for state consumption, primarily in the cities and urban areas but also for export. Once these ideas are arranged, the actual writing of the paper may begin. Once I finish what I feel completes a paragraph, I reread the paragraph, and then reread the entire document. Am able to focus more on how each sentence supports a main idea, and worry less about fulfilling the objectives of the assignment By writing the main ideas prior to starting the paper, I know I have all the necessary information that needs to be included in the paper. I believe that my vocabulary is the strongest part of my writing ability. I am an avid reader and I feel that my diction and vocabulary are a result of my dietary experience.The weakest point of my writing ability is my lack of transitions in my writing. When I think of what to write, I visualize the thoughts as bullet points, and feel that my writing occasionally feels like am listing these bullet points without a transition to flow from one point to the next. Consequently, am actively trying to incorporate more transitions into my writing. I believe that the best writing assignment I have produced this semester is my Milestone 6, which is the proposal for my redesign of a whole-house water purification system.I believe this was my best assignment because it was the most organized and thought-out of all of my assignments. Since most of the sections that comprise the proposal were completed in some form or another in the previous assignments, all I had to do was adapt the previous assignments to the format of the proposal and write the remaining parts of the proposal. TO fulfill a requirement of Technical Communications, I set up an appointment at the university of Houston Writing Center. I met with a graduate student majoring in English to help me edit the proposal. Allowed the suggestions of the graduate student that assisted me, and when I had completed the assignment felt very confident in the quality of the assignment. I believe that my worst writing assignment was my Milestone 7, which is the progress report. I had put this particular assignment off longer than was prudent, and, as a result, did not have the time or patience for writing that normally have. It had too many mistakes and felt rushed. I feel that could have done better on that assignment. After I graduate, I will begin my career as an engineer.As an engineer, writing will of coursed be involved for about 40% of my day. Will have to write reports, notes, memos, presentations and many other types of documents. I understand that it is critical for engineers to be precise and clear in their writing. Feel confident in my ability to complete these various writing tasks. I am also sure of my public speaking skills. I have been in some sort of leadership position in student organizations for the last five years, so have more experience in addressing groups of my peers than most people my age.I understand that engineers must have good public speaking skills in order to advance in industry. In conclusion, I feel that Technical Communications has helped to foster my writing ability over the last semester. I believe that the class has helped address an important skill necessary to all engineers. I have found that my writing process has become more structured and efficient. I have also found that my writing ability has grown, and, as a result, enjoy reading my own writing more. When it came time for his firstconfession he went with his sister Nora. Nora tormented Jackie and scared himinto believing he was a sinner and he will pay for all of his sins. Jackie wasnot as bad as Nora made him out to be, he was just being a normal young boy. When Jackies turn was up to make his confession, he was unsure of what to do sohe did what he thought was right but messed up and ended up humiliating Nora. In reality the priest did not find anything wrong with what Jackie did, thepriest actually found it to be very amusing. Jackie went ahead and told hissins and ended up only having to say three hail Marys. Nora was in completeshock and could not believe such a sinner got off with such an easy penance, butJackie did and also made good friends with the priest. Religion was very important in both stories. Ozziealways believed he was just a trouble maker because that is what he always heard,but I knew he really was not a trouble maker. Ozzie did what he did for apurpose including going to the roof. Being on the roof helped him realize whatwas going on around him. It helped him realize who he was and what he wasbecoming. Ozzie was just a boy wanting to learn without getting into trouble. Jackie found who he was while telling the priest his sins, all of them. Jackiereally was not bad, everyone just told him that he was all the time, so that iswhat he started believing. He was just a boy doing and acting how young boys act. All little kids, including girls, are not perfect, so how can anyone expectJackie to be perfect. Just because Nora believed she was perfect does not meanJackie is bad because he does not follow how Nora acts. Jackie found his trueself while telling the priest all of his sins, which made him feel he canactually live with himself. Reading both stories gave me a sense of what both religions are like. Im catholic and already know what it is like to go to confession, but I neverhad an experience like Jackie. Unfortunately, today’s adults do not feel obligated to remain in relationships. Most marriages in today’s society end in a brutal divorce that affects not only the parents but also the children as well. Children, more that adults, are faced with decisions that change their lives within twenty four hours. They are forced to sacrifice their carefree play of childhood at an early age, along with the comfort of a loving home to accommodate their parents’ absence and abandonment; consequently home has become a lonely place instead of a place of love and contentme nt. Children who are relative to separated families, go through life with a sense of fear in regards to trust. They find it problematical to obtain trusting relationships with their parents as well as people whom they consider to be their significant other. As a society, we have given trust the definition of an individual’s expectations and beliefs about the reliability of others. Because parents are usually the first and most important caregivers in a child’s life, the parent-child relationship forms the early basis for a child’s developing sense of trust. Whenever it came to writing even something as simple as my college admission essay, I would take hours to pen down my thoughts. Although I had consulted few books to learn how to write effectively, I could never be confident of my work. This course took me a step ahead in my endeavors to become an ardent writer. At first I would speedily begin writing without any outline or draft. This led me to skip a lot of important ideas that would come to mind later on. Fitting in these ideas on an ad hoc basis also disrupted the flow of my academic work so that later when I used to read it I found it nothing more than a haphazard summary of ideas. Upon taking this course, however, amongst the first things that my instructor taught was to prepare an initial draft of the prose and to proofread that draft before fin alizing it. This practice ensured that there were no dramatic leaps in my work and that all paragraphs were connected. The assignments I’ve worked on have developed in me the habit of proofreading all my work prior to submission. This has been a very effective strategy as it allows me to rectify any careless mistakes that I may have overlooked while speedily inking my thoughts. There have been cases where (during proofreading) I changed the sentence structure to break the monotony and replaced some words with their synonyms to increase the overall impact of the prose. This would be particularly useful for me when writing a cover letter for my job since any grammatical mistakes in this could put up a negative impression of me and cost me my job. It has inculcated in me the spirit of critically evaluating my work from all possible angles which allows me to explore various approaches to the same topic. This has overall improved the quality of my argumentative essays by equipping me with the skills to craft un-biased and convincing arguments by considering both sides of the topic. So, for instance, when putting up a project proposal to the Board of Directors as a manager in future, I would be able to analyze the feasibility of the project (including its pros and cons) in order to put up a strong argument and suggest strategies for overcoming the drawbacks. Surprisingly, these assignments did not require students to work in isolation (as one may expect from an ‘academic writing’ class). Instead, there were assignments which required students to reflect on the ideas of their peers which have provided us with the basis for producing peer-reviewed academic work. Not only has this led to an improvement in my written skills but also oral skills due to constant verbal communication and interaction during the assignments. In future, I see this as an important skill as I would be required to consult my boss/superior at work as well as my team prior to a rriving at a decision. Perhaps one of the most useful academic skills that I learnt in my assignments was that of referencing my work. In my initial assignments, my referencing was weak which would result in high plagiarism. However, with the use of electronic media I was able to provide all relevant referencing for ideas that I borrowed from other authors. Considering that plagiarism is a crime, the assignments taught me how to paraphrase ideas rather than merely quoting them. This has also contributed to my language skills as paraphrasing requires the use of synonyms and producing variations in sentence structure while sticking to the original idea. Best Holiday Essay This was the best holiday Ive ever had! I came here with my boyfriend for a 2 week stay and found the hotel brilliant. I was a little worried after booking it as some reviews on websites were quite negative but I am pleased to say that these worries did not come true. The rooms are basic but nice and clean, always had toilet paper and the maids were very contentious we were in our rooms one day when they came to clean as it was raining and they came back later many would have left it for that day! The beaches are stunning, unlike anything Ive seen, and when the waves washed up lots of seaweed onto the beach there was staff who removed it! There were always plenty of sun loungers free on the beach, although only a limited number which had sun parasols. The entertainment staff on the beach all day long were always very enthusiastic in getting everyone involved it was a good laugh! They also had a good range of activities, from water aerobics to cocktail making lessons to bingo on the beach! The only thing was that it took a little while to get served at the beach bar but it wasnt really an issue as it was good to get out of the sun for a bit!! There were also very kind waitresses who walked along the beach bringing you your free all inclusive drinks from the bar! The pools were lovely too, always kept clean, although the pool did turn my white bikini yellow!! However the thing I most enjoyed was the nightlife! The entertainment staff organised a different night out for each day of the week great because in our 2 week stay we could go to them all without having to go out every single night! You paid for you ticket, which was about $25 US and you got a wristband which would admit you to all the clubs free plus all you could drink in the pubs and clubs like the all inclusive deal in the resort! So no need to take much money out! Only we took some to tip the staff in the clubs as they were so attentive! You also got transported to the clubs by coach, but it was up to you to make you own way home! There was lots to do and reps in the hotel wee keen to help. We went to Xel Ha and XCaret, which are like caves and rivers, lots of fish, the chance to swim with dolphins, have you picture taken with parrots, scuba diving, snorkelling, jumping off a cliff into the sea, etc! There was so much to do that we couldnt manage it all!! And ran out of money too you need to take a fair bit for the trips etc, but we have just booked to go again this year!!!! Really looking forward to it!

Comparison of the Presentation of the Characters Jay Gatsby and Dick Diver from The Great Gatsby   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  F. Scott Fitzgerald is known as a writer who chronicled his times. This work has been critically acclaimed for portraying the sentiments of the American people during the 1920s and 1930s. ‘The Great Gatsby’ was written in 1924, whilst the Fitzgeralds were staying on the French Riviera, and ‘Tender is the Night’ was written nearly ten years later, is set on, among other places, the Riviera. There are very interesting aspects of these works, such as the way Fitzgerald treats his so-called heroes, and to what extent we can call them heroic.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Gatsby and Diver are both presented as wealthy men leading privileged lives. ‘The Great Gatsby’ was written before the Depression, and the optimism and faith in the power of money within the novel demonstrates this belief that people had. Notably, it is the characters’ faith in riches, and not Fitzgerald’s own. Gatsby is a self-made millionaire, making his money through bootlegging. He has acquired vast amounts of money, and believes that this money will help persuade Daisy to love him and leave Tom. This is illustrated in Chapter five when Daisy is shown around Gatsby’s mansion at his request. He shows her every detail, through from the gardens to his shirts and ‘he revalued everything in his house according to the measure of response it drew from her well-loved eyes’. Gatsby sees his money and possessions as wonderful things, but they are also more than that, they are a means to an end, the end being Daisy. He bough the house because of where it was in relation to Daisy (across the bay), and he held the most amazing parties in the hope that Daisy, or someone that knew Daisy would come. Gatsby, in effect, devoted his whole life to the search for Daisy, and his money is a tool to help him find his love.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Diver’s attitude to money is very much a contrast to this. Money to him does not represent freedom and choice, but a bind that ties him and constricts him. Diver is conscious through the whole novel that he himself is not the financially dominant member of his marriage, but Nicole, with her seemingly endless riches. ‘Tender is the Night’ is written after the Wall Street Crash and during the Depression, but Fitzgerald has moved his characters away from the Depression of the United States to the French Riviera... ... ideal. Leadership in Professional Nursing

Every day, a set team of nurses and nursing managers set out to ensure the health and well-being of their patients. To achieve this goal, a nurse manager must adhere to a specific style of nursing leadership. There are many different styles of leadership in the healthcare field. Bass and Barnes (1985) stated that the two most common are transformational and transactional (as cited in Frankel, 2008, p. 24). This paper will define leadership, the two different styles, how each are executed, as well as pros and cons of each. Review of Professional Nursing Literature Stogdill (1950) defines leadership as the process of influencing the activities of an organized group in its efforts toward goal-setting and goal achievement (as cited in Frankel, 2008, p. 24). The use of leadership behaviors is significantly correlated with job satisfaction, productivity, and organizational commitment. When a group faces a task, the leadership set before them directly affects the outcome. In order to obtain a positive outcome, a leader must be able to direct a group or individual toward the achievement of a common goal. Inspiring action and a shared vision greatly increase the chances of a positive employee outcome. As the nation continues to focus on issues of health, rather than just treatment of disease, nurses will increasingly play leadership roles (Mittelman, 2010, p. 10). The first type of leadership is transformational. The main focus of transformational leadership is to conjoin nurse managers and nurses to strive to meet a united goal. Leaders transform followers by increasing their awareness of task importance and value, getting them to focus first on team or organizational goals rather than their own interests, and activating their higher-order needs. It is vital to allow young nurses the opportunity to form their own opinions and receive feedback. These young nurses are trying to find their place within the work force and will not benefit from being criticized on many things at once. Job dissatisfaction is due to managers not giving due recognition and support, not being able to follow through on problems and not helping but criticizing in a crisis (Loke, 2001). The boss must be careful and narrow down the areas in which improvement is needed and explain why the improvements are needed. When utilizing this method, Sutton suggested that they (bosses) consciously break out of the power bubble by asking for direct input and feedback (as cited in Flora, 2010, p. 50). By doing this, nurses are allowed to hold a functioning role in the development of policies. Bass (1985), found that â€Å"the transformational leadership factors were more highly correlated with perceived group effectiveness and job satisfaction, and contributed more to individual performance and motivation, than transactional leaders† (as cited in Frankel, 2008, p. 23). This type of leader is often found empowering their employees and giving them a sense self worth within the company. Steers (1977) found â€Å"commitment improves work performance and reduces absenteeism and turnover which are costly to organizations (as cited in Loke, 2001). Transactional leadership is built on reciprocity, the ways in which leaders and followers influence one another, and the idea that the relationship between leader and their followers develops from the exchange of some reward, such as performance rating’s, pay, recognition, or praise (Marturano, 2004). This style of leadership does not promote a close relationship amongst the boss and the employee, but has proven to be practical in certain situations. According to Frankel (2008), â€Å"transitional leadership is short-lived, episodic, and task based† (p. 23). Based on this, the employees’ attraction is geared towards a more selfish transaction, rather than the common good of the group. Many employees find themselves working past this type of hierarchy to acquire the exchange they are seeking. Application of Clinical Example Mark, the nurse manager of a fifty-two bed intensive care unit, was attending a budget meeting with the nurse managers from other departments, as well as other various administrators. Right now, many hospitals all over the nation are being forced to make budget cuts because of the economic recession the country is suffering from, and Mark’s hospital is no exception. In the meeting, in order to save money, the CEO forbids all of the managers to allow any overtime. Mark knows that times arise when his nurses simply are not able to clock out on time, but he must enforce the rules passed down to him. Mark quietly accepts the decision made by administration without any contest. Over the next couple of days, Mark holds several staff meetings to inform his employees that no overtime will be permitted and that anyone who either clocks in early or clocks out late must end their next shift early to adjust their time. Subsequently, any employee who has accumulated overtime at the end of the pay period will be suspended. The nurses of the ICU respond less than favorably, arguing that clocking out early from a shift would not only cause additional stress for the nurse, but also would almost certainly lead to negative patient outcomes. Many of the nurses voiced their concern that they were putting their license in jeopardy. Mark’s only response was â€Å"this is the way it has to be,† leaving them feeling let down that their manager didn’t stand up and do more to protect them. Over the next few weeks, Mark could tell that the overall productivity, quality of care, and employee morale that had once been excellent had fallen dramatically. Because of the added stress from the nurses feeling rushed throughout their shift, there was an increase in documented medication administration errors, a decrease in the quality of clinical skills, and abandonment of patient and family teaching. Looking back at the different types of leadership, Mark could have possibly changed the outcome of this situation by understanding the style of each. Leadership is not just about picking that or this strategy or goal; it’s equally about standing up publicly and saying this is what we are going to do and why we are doing it (Grayson, 2010, p. 6). First, Mark could instill a sense of empowerment by encouraging the staff to come up with alternate ways to save money. Secondly, he could have stood up to the administration and taken some heat by demonstrating how it’s not always possible to clock out on time. Lastly, he should stand behind his staff, and don’t give up until the situation is resolved. Enabling others to act is a leadership behavior that infuses others with energy and confidence. Developing relationships is based on mutual trust and providing subordinates with discretion and make their own decisions (Loke, 2001). Conclusion Despite these contextual influences, the expectations of leaders are that they will promote change within their organization and thereby shape its modus operandi and culture (McIntosh & Tolson, 2008). Understanding the different styles of leadership is vital in keeping up with the constant evolution of healthcare. One must be able to not only manage, but also inspire employees to achieve goals. Former president John Quincy Adams was once quoted as saying, â€Å"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader. † By following these simple guidelines, nurse managers are able to generate a more satisfying work environment, enhance employee performance, and increase patient outcome.

What I mean by sharing with is that you get a feeling for each other. I can empathize with you and see things through your eyes. When a quality interpersonal relationship is present there's certain amount of synergy that takes place between the persons involved in the relationship. A good example of a quality interpersonal relationship could be found within the strong family unit. If we were to study a family that is close knit what would we see. We would most likely see the following characteristics: individual respect, trust, open lines of communication, open mindedness, patience, empathy, love and many other attributes which add up to a strong interpersonal relationship. With in a strong family you find people that truely feel for each other. For example if Mom is sick the morale of the other family members goes down. If Dad gets a promotion the hold family shares the feelings of esteem with Dad. The point I'm trying to make is that in quality interpersonal relationship you will start to feel some of things that I feel which allows you to better understand me and communicate with me. Although a quality interpersonal relationship sounds like the best thing since Campbell soup and the Gerry-curl it's not a relationship that's easily achieved. To achieve a quality interpersonal relationship takes time, effort, desire, understanding, trust, disclosure, and feedback, effective communication, and etc. When we first meet a person we don't immediately establish an interpersonal relationship. As implied in the opening paragraphs, a quality interpersonal relationship goes for beyound conducting casual conversation. It takes time to build an interpersonal relationship. Why? People like to interact; however, they are protective of there feelings and don't immediately open up to let you inside to see who's live there. What I'm saying is to establish an interpersonal relationship with others you need to know things about them and get some perceptiion of how they interpret things. To get this type of understanding about another person takes time. A good example would be the development of a friendship. Think of your best friend. This is probably one of the most productive inpersonal relationships that exist for you. Now go back from the time you met up until now. How did you get to become such best friends? As you think through the process you find those things that lead you to become best friends are the some of the same things that are required to build and interpersonal relationship. I think the depth or even mere existance of an interpersonal relationship hinges on disclosure and feedback. Let's talk about the importance of disclosure and feedback in a quality interpersonal relationship. First of all let me give credit where credit is do. My ideas of disclosure and feedback come from the self- disclosure model developed by Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham. The model has become know and Johari's window. The premise of the model is that the more we disclose about ourselves and get feedback the more we learn about ourselves and the more others learn about us. I believe there is a direct tie between this theory and how a quality interpersonal relationship is achieved. When I met the person who is now my best friend, I started the relationship with a casual hello, like most people do. As time passed, I found reasons to disclose things about me. Well guess what happen; as I started to disclose things about me he also shared things about him. As more time passed, we started to give feedback to each other about the characteristics and behaviors of each other. ! The longer relationship lasted and the more we disclosed the more we begin to trust each other. The more trust the more disclosure and feedback. This continued until we've developed an inseperable friendship and a top quality interpersonal relationship. How to manage someone older than you Most of us are used to a certain dynamic at work- those above us in the pecking order have typically been in the workforce longer and are older, and those below us are relatively newer to the world of work and are likely younger. However, this dynamic has effectively been thrown overboard in a wide array of industries. Today, we’re seeing younger and younger individuals in positions of power and influence in the workforce, and these days it’s not uncommon for the power hierarchy to be reversed, with older individuals reporting to younger bosses. According to a recent article in Harvard Business Review, â€Å"Younger bosses- already prevalent in industries like IT, professional services, and accounting- will likely become more so as ‘companies promote young Millennials into leadership positions and organizations make more of an effort to retain top talent,’ says Jeanne C. Market analysis of Stratsim management simulations StratSim management simulations are on-line games pioneered by Michael Deighan and Stuart W.James from Virginia USA aimed at giving students a wider exposure in the real world business arena. The initiators perceived students to view the simulations as a unique learning event where the knowledge gained so far within the academic years could be now made into practices. Quintessentially, apart from being a learning experience it was anticipated to bring a challenge to both managers and executives. According to the case, This is far easier to say than to achieve. 1.1. Industry Overview StratSim management simulation was a game-like, all about different firms operating in an automobile industry whose managers compete to the maximum by setting goals and objectives that are intended to outwit its immediate and within industry competitors. The managers used efforts to the best of their abilities so as to ensure right decisions are put forward just to earn superb profits due to greater sales ascribed by the management. Altogether, throughout the simulations there had been a total number of seven (7) firms ranging from firms A, B, C, D, E, F A and G. The initial alphabets of each firm meant that its respective vehicles began with either of them from A until G. All these firms had a similar starting point to commence its operations including funds. Among the firms, the best one was to be judged on performance bases mainly in terms of market share, market value, income generated as well as efficiency in playing with the marketing tools i.e. marketing mix (4 Ps). 1.2. Firms Overview Firm F was a group formed by four members who are Raya Nassor, Sarah Alley, Shahista Hasmani and I, the author of this report. Firm F comprised of three (3) vehicles which were Fantasy, Fast and Fish while their classes were Family, Truck and Economy respectively. I worked hand-in-hand with my colleagues in making the best decisions for our firms survival in an ocean of high waves of competition. The firms utmost intention was to position itself as a market leader by entering new markets and meeting the needs and desires of customers through vehicle attributes. However, there was a class which wasnt served by almost all the rival firms. It was known as AEV which must be addressed as technology modern with integrated marketing efforts. As far as Firm F is concerned, my colleagues and I decided not to opt for it as our firm was keen enough on cost minimisation and not spendthrifts of resources. 2.0. Mission and Vision Mission Statement Mission statement aims to provide employees and stakeholders with clarity about the overall purpose and raison dà ªtre of the organisation. (Johnson et al 2009, p.112) According to Peter Drucker (father of modern management), what is our business? is all about its mission. It is also known as creed of statement. Firm Fs statement of purpose could be: To address different consumer segments desires through value creation with respect to their financial capability when it comes to automobiles and eventually ending-up with immense profits generated from sales. Vision Statement A vision statement is concerned with what the organisation aspires to be. Its purpose is to set out a view of the future so as to enthuse, gain commitment and stretch performance. (Johnson et al 2009, p.112) Therefore, firm Fs dream is as follows: To be a company of the people, for the people and by the people in the automobile industry. 3.0. External and Internal Analysis These are the frameworks used to carry out an analysis of an organisations progress by examining two major extremes, the inner (internal) as well as the outer (external) environments. 3.1. PESTEL The PESTEL framework categorises environmental influences into six main types: political, economic, social, technological, environmental and legal. (Johnson et al 2009, p.25) The external environment is much more complex than internal because the earlier could exert enormous pressure to firm F to the extent of determining its ways to carry on its operations. Now let me examine all the six factors while reflecting firm F. Political This refers to the roles played by the government together with the degree of countries stability which will influence production of the motor vehicles for firm F to move on or lag behind. Also, this factor will determine whether the firm is undermined by a particular set of restrictions in its business such as not manufacturing vehicles which are similar to those possessed by the government. Throughout my analysis, all the firms including firm F were operating in a peaceful environment for the following reasons: Firms were increasingly thinking on product development and further production. Various customer categories continued to buy automobiles of their desire as they did not doubt the political situation in their areas. Increase in the number of dealers in all the extremes of a compass direction. Economic Within the course of the game, the business cycle wasnt predictable due to the fact that pricing structures employed by the automobile firms was different to one another. Firm F and other were aggressive towards increasing the dealer discount rates thinking that it would boost its motor vehicle sales and hence increase its profitability. However, the economy of the firms operating in the simulation kept on deteriorating with reference to the starting market shares, market values, stock price and overall net income. At the end, economies were badly shaped. Social This refers to the society in which the firms are operating their automobile business. Within the society, people differ in culture and demography. Some had been considering others as their point of reference in buying certain cars. Also, its obvious that as there are many automobile firms means more vehicles down the roads and hence more traffic collisions to the extent of delaying people planned activities during the day. Technological Advancement in technology was restricted among the firms as there were maximum limitations of technological capabilities in interior, styling, safety and quality extremes for which not a single firm could exceed. Above all, the firms were given an opportunity to make developments and marketing for a new class i.e. AEV which at the start had no introduced vehicle. The AEV being technology-driven, it is possible that it could use electricity, gas or other means. From my narrow view, I perceive AEV development to be more risky. Environmental Here Im greatly concerned because while vehicles are developed who knows how the waste materials are damped. This may have greatly deteriorated the soil and the species inhibiting in and on. These vehicles emit green house gases which add more health concerns to its own users through pollution after the fuel has been burnt in the engines. Legal It is up to the government to make sure that, a firm which goes against the labour laws, health and safety regulations, environmental preservation and trade practices are debarred from operating in the automobile industry. The government should enact laws which limit the number of vehicles to be owned by a single person unless it is big company with large operations in-order to minimise pollution on air, land and water sources. 3.2. Porters Five Forces Model According to Michael Porter, there are five cut-throat forces that demonstrate the rules of competition within the automobile industry and which determine both industry attractiveness and the degree of profitability. These forces are: Threat of new Entrants Throughout my analysis, I realised that for a firm to enter into automobile industry is not that much easy due to the reasons that, too much investment funds will be required to have a successful starting point as a matter of fact its not all about producing but knowing the needs of the market through Research and Development (RD) which costs greatly. For late movers, enjoying economies of scale will be highly minimal because there are giants already operating in large scales. Some of the giants may have done either backward or forward integration which may distract new entrants. Hence, the threat of new entrants in the automobile industry is low but firms need to be extra careful as the world is dynamic. Threat of Substitutes There are plenty of substitutes to vehicles but it doesnt mean people will shift towards them i.e. bicycles, scooters and walking. I dont expect people to abandon automobiles due to increasing costs instead people will shift to more economical ones from luxurious. Hence, the threat of substitutes is medium. Bargaining power of Suppliers Suppliers degree of power is low due to the existence of a big number of components and parts distributors in the automobile industry. It is likely for a manufacturer to switch from one supplier to the other. On the other side, firms at StartSim are likely to enjoy low prices of components because suppliers are many. Bargaining power of Buyers In the StratSim world, this is high as customers are likely to navigate from one manufacturer to another if their needs and desires are not well addressed considering the fact that, there are almost seven (7) firms operating in automobiles. Reluctantly, firms will be forced to stick on customers decisions on the requirements, pricing and other vehicle attributes. Customers are the core and a major reason for the firms existence. Rivalry Intensity This is very high because of the presence of many firms including firm F operating in the automobiles. These firms used various business strategies which have got differing effects to the competition intensity. Hence, the degrees of profitability and market shares will differ at large. 3.3. SWOT ANALYSIS This is a framework used to examine internal and external environment. Strengths (Internal) Firm Fs names of its motor vehicles were unique i.e. Fantasy, Fast and Fish which couldnt be easily imitated by its rivals. Weaknesses (Internal) Mismanagement of stocks which had a greater fall in value together with more inventory days. Failure to make proper use of the marketing tools i.e. promotions and prices. Firm Fs product ranges didnt compete effectively with those of its competitors. Opportunities (External) The AEV class vehicles could be a platform for firm F to maximise its market share and sales growth. Poor performance in other firms could allow firm F to gain more customers who couldnt benefit from the earlier firms. Moving into markets which were not served before through market and product development. Threats (External) Continuous technological developments for which firm F couldnt cope. Global economic recessions resulting to fall in currencies and slowing vehicles demands. Automobile industry being competitive, firm Fs employees may have been head-hunted by other rival firms leading moving away the company secrets. 4.0. Strategic Planning Strategy is the direction and scope of an organisation over the long term, which achieves advantage in a changing environment through its configuration of resources and competences with the aim of fulfilling stakeholder expectations. (Johnson et al 2009, p.3) Planning refers to making decisions on which strategic choices to carry forward in the course of the business. 4.1. Basic Strategy Firm Fs long term strategy is to offer vehicles with the lower possible investments but in maximum numbers with the intention of increasing the net cumulative income and market share from period 1 until period 4 with much focus on the Family class. 4.2. Technology Firm F thought that to go hand-in-hand with advancing technology as not necessary because it could lead it away from high profitability. Instead minor upgrades in the vehicle attributes are considered. Technology will be used to minimise wastage so as to increase productivity. 4.3. Financial Control The management of firm F aspires to have immense sales and increasing profitability but at same time controlling Research Development as it wont like to spend a lot for it. It looks forward to increase assets held while decreasing liabilities including debts. 4.4. Marketing Firm F intend to create awareness to both society and potential customers through advertisements and promotions. Also, efforts will be done to review pricing structures and the vehicles with related products to be of value to customers. Distribution points will be monitored too. 4.5. Future Development The management of firm F looks forward to do major upgrades in its motor vehicles if the level of profitability will permit it to do so. Otherwise, the kind of development which is expected could be maximising of the firms plant production capacity. 5.0. Lesson I learnt from simulation exercise I came with a mindset that a firms market share could be inversely proportional to net cumulative income. Also, it wasnt a good idea at times to discuss with members from rival groups as my group was at last decision mislead by another group leading to its low income and stock price too. Teamwork is the essence towards achieving success as decisions were jointly made by group members who differed in knowledge, background and experience. 6.0. Conclusion To me, it was much lucrative due to the fact that I had been exposed from theoretical to practical because the simulations made me think outside the box as to whether the strategies I took part in could outwit competitors. Finally, I agree that a business without strategy wont have a direction.

There are many possible ways to satisfy the needs of target customers and these variables are organized into the marketing mix or â€Å"the 4 P’s† (Product, Price, Place, and Promotion). †¢Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Product: A product is the need-satisfying offering of a firm including physical goods or services †¢Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Price: The price is the amount of money that is charged for â€Å"something† of value. †¢Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Place: The place is the making of goods and services available in the right quantities at the right locations. †¢Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Promotion: Promotion is the communicating of information between seller and potential buyer or others. The Product area is concerned with developing the right â€Å"product† for the target market. This may involve a physical good, a service, or a blend of both. The important thing to remember is that the good and/or service should satisfy some customers’ needs (Perreault, 2002). Place is concerned with all the decisions involved in getting the â€Å"right† product to the target market’s place. A product isn’t much good to a customer if it isn’t available when and where it’s wanted. The third P (Promotion) is concerned with telling the target market or others in the channel of distribution about the â€Å"right† product. Sometimes promotion is focused on acquiring new customers, and sometimes it’s focused on retaining current customers. Promotion includes personal selling, mass selling, and sales promotion (Perreault, 2002). In addition to developing the right Product, Place, and Promotion, marketing managers must also decide the right Price. Price setting must consider the kind of competition in the target market and the cost of the whole marketing mix (Perreault, 2002). A manager must also try to estimate customer reaction to possible prices. If customers won’t accept the price, all of the planning effort is wasted. All four Ps are needed in a marketing mix. The four Ps must be productively combined, so that a company develops the best mix for its target market. In other words, each decision must work well with all of the others to make a logical whole.
